SKINPEN®
A MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURE INVOLVING A PEN-LIKE DEVICE
Information
It’s only natural for the underlying structures of the skin to deteriorate with age. The result is lines, wrinkles, large pores and uneven skin tone and texture.
Microneedling is an effective technique for reversing these common signs of ageing.
What is SkinPen®?
SkinPen is a medical microneedling device that induces collagen production, which helps diminish skin concerns. Along with addressing common signs of ageing, microneedling is also ideal for melasma as well as surgical and acne scars.
During a typical treatment, a pen-like device is attached to a disposable cartridge, which contains a series of small needles. As the device moves across the skin, it creates small microinjuries, which aren’t visible to the naked eye.
These small punctures encourage tissue regeneration, which gradually improves the appearance of the skin. This tissue regeneration process is referred to as collagen induction therapy (CIT).
The CIT process breaks down old and damaged strands of collagen, leaving the skin to produce new, stronger strands. Not only does this improve the appearance of the skin, but the structure and function too.
It usually takes up to three months to see a visible improvement and multiple sessions are required for best results.
What to Expect Following a SkinPen® Procedure
While experiences vary between clients, the following can usually be expected after a SkinPen session:
- Mild redness and swelling for several days after treatment
- Slight discomfort for the first 24 hours
- Mild bruising
- Minor crusting and scabbing for several days after each session
- Skin dryness and tightness
- Itching and tingling for several days
- Skin peeling
- Temporary darkening of skin pigment before it lightens
SKINPEN® – Q & A:
Developed by Bellus Medical, SkinPen is microneedling device. It’s proven to safely treat scarring, signs of ageing and skin conditions such as melasma. The microinjuries caused by the SkinPen device stimulates the body’s natural healing process, which has a rejuvenating effect.
If you want to rejuvenate your skin and reduce scarring without the need for extensive downtime, SkinPen is an ideal treatment. SkinPen has set the industry standard for safety and has fast become a popular choice globally.
SkinPen is effective for both men and women of various ages with skin tones ranging from light to tanned.
SkinPen works by creating hundreds of microinjuries across the affected area of the skin. The body responds by triggering its wound healing process. This process helps remodel tissue without forming scar tissue. Most patients can resume their usual activities within a day.
SkinPen sessions are highly effective on their own. However, incorporating Healite (LED) light Therapy after each session can speed up the healing process. It’s also important to carefully follow all of your therapist’s aftercare instructions for the best results.
Patients who have active skin cancer in the area they want to treat should avoid SkinPen sessions. Those with irritated skin, open wounds, bleeding disorders and allergies to stainless steel also won’t be able to receive treatment. Lastly, patients taking medications that contain isotretinoin and women who are pregnant or nursing, won’t be approved for this treatment.
Overall, microneedling devices are minimally invasive, which means the risk of side effects is low too. Your skin therapist will take you through any potential side effects during your consultation. Following specific aftercare instructions will also keep any effects to a minimum. Side effects after a SkinPen session are rare.
This is dependent on the patient – the recovery process is slightly different for everyone directly after a SkinPen procedure. Most patients are able to resume their usual activities the next day. However, this excludes any activities that would produce excess sweat and irritate the skin following your SkinPen session.
While SkinPen treatments can improve the appearance of surgical and acne scars, it won’t result in complete removal.
SkinPen treatment will certainly improve the appearance of melasma but cannot remove it completely or prevent it from recurring.
In most instances, clients need more than one SkinPen session to achieve their desired outcome. The number of treatments required will depend on the condition of your skin and what you want to treat. Your skin therapist will assist you with a personalised treatment plan based on your needs. This treatment plan is reviewed later on once your skin starts to respond to treatment.
It’s possible for microneedling results to last for longer periods of time than others. However, multiple sessions and maintenance sessions are highly recommended.
It can take anywhere from three to six months to see results after treatment with the SkinPen device. This is mainly because the skin needs time to heal and rejuvenate as the wound healing process takes effect.
It’s best if you use skincare products recommended by your therapist following SkinPen sessions. After each treatment, your skin has microchannels that absorb nutrients and moisture more effectively, which is why the products you use matter. Certain products end up causing an allergic reaction when the skin has never absorbed them that deeply.
Following each SkinPen treatment, we recommend the following:
- SkinFuse® Lift HG only should be used for 24hrs after your session
- SkinFuse® Rescue Calming Complex should be used after the first day
