How does skin laxity, or sagging skin, occur?
As we age, collagen and elastin fibres in our skin lose their strength, and the SMAS layer loses its supporting ability, resulting in laxity and wrinkled skin. Skin laxity can also be influenced by genetics and lifestyle factors, such as excess exposure to UV rays.
The amount of skin laxity someone can have, and how soon they may experience it, will vary from person to person. Sometimes, candidates for Ultraformer III may need more than one treatment. Still, you can typically feel a sensation of tightness after your first treatment due to the heat from the ultrasound energy. When you plan your treatment, you’ll have the condition of your skin assessed to see how many treatments you may need, according to your individual level of skin laxity.
How do Ultraformer III treatments work?
Using ultrasound energy (HIFU), Ultraformer III uses a targeted approach to heat the tissue to the specific temperature required to induce ‘thermal injury.’ The thermal injury causes collagen to instantly begin to contract and continue to contract for the months following. The instant contracting of collagen fibres can cause an immediate tightening effect after your first treatment. Still, results are then seen gradually, as more collagen and elastin are produced in the skin.
Ultraformer III treatments essentially stimulate immediate and lasting production of collagen and elastin, helping to support the skin in the long term. A course of multiple treatments can continue to build your results, depending on the amount of skin tightening you want to achieve.
What can I expect during the actual treatment session?
The treatment works by delivering ultrasound energy (HIFU) through a hand-held applicator. The applicator can be placed to target precise areas, according to where you want to see an increase in skin tightness. Ultraformer III can focus on the face, neck, or around the eyes. We may be able to target multiple areas within one session – the details of your actual treatment will be explained during your initial consultation, as we aim to tailor every treatment to align with individual needs.
Ultraformer III targets three layers of the treatment area – the superficial dermis, the deeper dermis and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, which is responsible for connecting your skin to the muscular structure below. Essentially, this means that the treatment aims to deeply treat the skin, prompting a change from the deeper structures as opposed to just superficially.
The treatment is quite time-efficient. For example, a treatment for the full face and neck will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Since the treatment is non-invasive, you can return back to your usual routine straight afterwards.

Who is a suitable candidate?
Suitable candidates for Ultraformer III want to target mild to moderate skin laxity or sagging, on the face, neck or around the eyes. Since the treatment uses ultrasound energy, your treatment area will need to be assessed for any contraindications to the treatment method. In general, the treatment can be performed on all skin types and at any time of the year, but ultimately, the condition of your skin will influence your suitability.

How often will I need treatment sessions?
The amount of Ultraformer III treatments you will need will depend on your level of skin laxity and the results you want to achieve. Our skin therapists can discuss your needs during your consultation and create a treatment plan.
If you’re treating the face or neck, we usually find that one to three treatments are sufficient, each performed about three months apart to let the skin heal between each treatment. For eyes and submental areas, we normally recommend three to six treatments, each spaced one month apart. You will continue to see results for up to six months after your treatment, since the treatment essentially achieves gradual results. As for maintenance treatments, we typically recommend these annually or biannually.
